Obesity on a Global Scale

A Pandemic

Obesity is a disease where a human accumulates excessive amounts of fat that presents a major health risk. All over the world, obesity rates have sky rocketed coinciding with the development of efficient technologies and growing fast food chains in the last 50 years. At least 28 million people die each year due to overweight related causes and roughly 300,000 just in the US. This is just as much a pandemic as any other virus related disease would be considered.

The graphs below show how the US compares with the rest of the world and the overall increase over time.

Obesity is listed only as the 5th highest global cause of death, but if carefully analyzed you will find that 5 out of the top 10 are diet related.
