Here at Cal Poly SLO

A brochure created by campus dining to promote "choosing well" among the health foods available here on campus.

Unfortunate Deceit

Common Marketing Strategies in Full Effect

There is clear theme of health and the abundance of choice portrayed in this brochure. But how much of these foods that are offered actually provide beneficial nutritional value?

The Facts of Campus Dining

Campus Dining claims to provide thousands of menu options that are healthy choices for students, and this brochure lists a selection of these dining options that are supposedly nutritious. However, it then contradicts itself by adding 'tips' when ordering to help create healthier meals. These include limit smoothies that include frozen yogurt, be mindful of added whipped cream, or go easy on the cheese. While these are useful and mindful tips, why do these need to be said in the first place? If the school is aware of how these added unnecessary fat and sugar contents are unhealthy, why do they continue to serve this to students? The answer is, it's because that's what people like to eat. It's the economically sufficient answer.

Just as Jamie Oliver concluded with his campaign in Huntington, West Virginia, Cal Poly prioritizes budget and the economics of feeding the student body in the end.

On the surface, cal poly promotes mindful eating. This brochure uses the trending, health signifying terms such as gluten free, vegan, low-fat, lean protein, veggie-options, fresh, and whole wheat to seemingly provide and abundance of healthy options. Yet, one close look at the actual nutritional facts shows how deceiving these claims are.

Hearth - Vista Grande

VG's, the dining center for freshman, sells dishes like this left and right. The near 1000 calorie singular plate is bad enough never mind the sodium content. This pizza is even labeled as a 'healthy' option due to the few pieces of veggie on top. It is no wonder the freshman 15 is a phenomenon across college campuses.

Considered one of the only non-fast food options on campus

Red Radish - University Union

Somehow this 'superfood' salad is almost 500 calories loaded with 833mg of sodium and 28g of sugar. Students who don't check the nutritional contents, the majority, will go about their day thinking they had a nice healthy salad. When in reality, they could've had a burger and the body wouldn't tell the difference.
